shaljah Patel..you put into words what most of us were unable or incapacitated by the then prevalent circumstances from vocalising..the mixed feelings of utter hatred, despise and disbelief at what the defunct ECK led by its cowardly chairman failed to stand for the country rather than let it go to the dogs...call it a hate letter or love letter to the nation.. the point was made....the sickening feeling of the ECK betrayal and foul play still remains...as the coalition partners, they of different wombs forced to co-exist, bicker andd threaten each other..we all remain aware that never again shall we let a single or few individuals bring down this country again...in this we remain..united..patriots...

Hey back, Shailja,
agreed, there was much more to your letter than hate; but first impressions do count for a lot in notes like these. Long before you got to the love and the pain of your closing lines, you were telling Mr. Kivuitu about "the nausea I feel at the mention of your name." If that's not hateful, can we agree on bilious?
The mystery of Kivuitu's apparent capitulation to corrupt authority remains one of the most emotive head-scratchers of the whole election saga. Your letter captured it well. But to say there was no hate, or that it wasn't even meant for Mr. Kivuitu after you went to some lengths to deliver it to him personally, seems a touch disingenuous.
I can only encourage Kenyans to read it for themselves.

Hey there Arno,

"The good professor, Wambui Mwangi, started out by reading the poetic hate letter Shailja Patel wrote to ECK chairman Samuel Kivuitu a few months back."

"Poetic" - yes. "Hate letter" - no. It's a call to accountability, it's a plea to Kivuitu to open his eyes and acknowledge the cost to us all of his tragic abdication of responsibility at the moment when history most required him to deliver on his mandate.

The closing paragraph of the letter:

"But, as you've probably guessed by now, Mr. Kivuitu, this isn't really a letter to you at all. This is an attempt to put words to what cannot be expressed in words. To mourn what is too immense to mourn. A clumsy groping for something beyond the word 'heartbreak'. A futile attempt to communicate what can only be lived, moment by moment. This is a howl of anguish and rage. This is a love letter to a nation. This is a long low keening for my country."

Thanks Mitzy, you're right of course; it's Sierra Leone where Ishmael's book remains unavailable, not all of Africa. Apologies for the error.

Incisive article it is my only worry is that at times african writers tend to overestimate their ability to change this world. Of course this doesnt mean they cant try. Good start like the blue band good start.
