Kenya Burning

Kenyan photographer and CNN Africa Photojournalist Of The Year award winner, Boniface Mwangi, has received a congratulatory missive from U. S Secretary Of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton for his work during the Kenyan post-elections violence. Secretary Clinton saw Mwangi’s work during her visit to Kenya when U.S Ambassador to Kenya, Michael Rannenberger, presented her with the Kenya Burning book, jointly published by The Godown and Kwani Trust.

Yasuyoshi Chiba, whose work is also published in the Kenya Burning book, has been awarded the World Press Photo Award in the ‘Singles’ category. The photos captures tens of Maasai and Kalenjin warriors engaged in a bow-and-arrow field battle during the post elections violence.

Below is the letter from Hillary Rodham Clinton to Boniface Mwangi:

I bought this book and though the pictures were heart breaking they were very good and showed alot of courage from you. You do have my best wishes and prayers … continue keeping us in the light, with your other fellow photographers.

This book shows that Kenya has the potential to go the Rwanda way if we don’t fix ourselves real fast.

Those pictures struck the part of me, where I suspect God lives. Never again! We can say no to this, I believe. Otherwise, that was a job well done. That book will always remind us that genocide is not a reserve of some ‘chosen’ few.
