Poets Ignite Wasanii Restaurant, KNT - Thursday, June 12

Written by Kwani · June 10, 2008

Dennis Dancan Mosiere, aka Grandmaster Masese, a Kwani favourite at Open Mic and many other lyrical events, has taken the reigns of a Toronto-based initiative called Ignite Poets and brought it home to Nairobi. Ignite Poets uses poetry to inspire youth, allowing them to work together and collaborate for worthy causes.

The first Kenyan showcase takes place this Thursday, June 12th, at 7pm in Wasanii Restaurant (Kenya National Theatre). Proceeds will go to the Hawkers Market Girls Centre in Parklands, Nairobi , which focuses on educating young underprivileged women. The centre provides girls with opportunities to hone their skills and talents so that they can eventually be self sufficient. Attendees are asked to donate what they can, with a 200 bob minimum.

“People have often told me, ‘Violent action speaks louder than words of peace. How can words make a difference?’ This is a question we’ve all struggled with - and perhaps there is no definite answer. However, I do know that words have united two poets from two vastly different countries together. Oceans and miles will not limit the possibilities for educating and inspiring. Words can and will make a difference- if we only act upon them.”
