The Baobab Prize

Written by Kwani · September 25, 2009

Dear Writers,

We are very happy to announce the second year of the Baobab Prize, an annual international literary award established to encourage the writing of African literature for young readers.

The Baobab Prize annually invites entries of unpublished African short stories written for audiences either 8-11 years or 12-15 years. This year the prize will award $1,000 to the best story in each category and $800 to the most promising young writer (18 years and below). Also all short listed stories will be considered for possible publishing. The Baobab Prize is open to African citizens of all ages. Deadline for submission is April 15, 2010.

The Baobab Prize is here to shake up African literature as we know it. We count on your support in making this happen. All necessary details and information are available on our website: http://baobabprize.googlepages.com

Is Poetry also a welcome thing for the competition?

    Hi Martin,

Unfortunately we accept only African-themed children’s stories.

    Thanks,

    Hi Kwani team,
Could you be so kind as to give your faithful following some inkling of when you intend to put the entrants to the Africa I Live in Story Contest out of their misery? The wait is just unbearable.
That said, thank you for informing the African writing community on the opportunities open to them. Keep up the good work.
