“What Is Fair?” Poetry Night in Partnership with International Budget Partnership Kenya22/09/2016
The International Budget Partnership Kenya (IBPK) and Kwani Trust will collaborate on a poetry event addressing issues of fairness, equity and governance. We invite performance poets to help us think through the question of ‘What is fair?’ by performing works that address the above-mentioned issues at the poetry event on Thursday 22nd September.
Fairness, equity and governance are at the heart of the 2010 Constitution. But what does equity mean? These have been debates that have been part of Kenya in its 53-year old history. The conversations have primarily been hidden within specialized policy debates or agenda driven activism. We feel that one way of opening this up beyond these spaces, as important as they, are is to hold a poetry event that addresses the issues equity and governance. The question: What is fair?
We feel that performance poetry has become central to creative expression in Kenya and a key voice on social and political debates. We feel that the event can provide artistic and creative rigour to the equity debate and also explore the relationship between the arts and issues of concern such as these.
The poetry event will feature 6 chosen poets from across Kenya. They will be chosen from a diverse set of voices and styles. The event is part of a larger conference, Equity Week, that takes place during the week of 19th September convened by The International Budget Partnership Kenya.
