The book is eleven chapter on celebrating friendship. It defines what friendship as caring, sharing, reciprocity, etc. Friendship is a foundational relationship with siblings, spouses, parents and if a good foundation for every teamwork. Life is about relationships and fellowship with self, God, Family, community and the world. This fellowship starts early at nursery/Sunday school children talk about “my friend”.

The need for human connectivity is basic.

I wrote this book for several reasons.

  1. I couldn’t find book on friendship among Africans especially stories on women .so my objective was to add to documentation.
  2. Identify roles and benefits of friendship. I identified 7 which form 7 of the chapters including being there, support, mentor and accountability partners. I have told stories under each of these chapters that exemplify the roles
  3. Identify values necessary for sustenance of genuine friendship
  4. Some of the stories one hears on friendship are negative and yet women have always created support systems among themselves be it their individual friends, chamas, prayer groups etc

As some of you know, I lost my husband in 2010. Although I always appreciated my friends, the support that I received from my relatives and friends was amazing and we shall never forget it.

  • Tell story of 1st anniversary and thank pastors and church for support
  • So decided to spend some time researching on friendship.
  • It has been a three-year journey of research, reading, reflecting and talking to various stakeholders. The result is this book.

HOW?/ CONTENT

  • Through interviews
  • I interviewed over forty women about their friendships. Their stories from the essence of the book.
  • Some stories are happy; others are sad others are in between. They are authentic and as far as possible were written as they were told. Each story is told under the role that friend plays.
  • African tradition had some sayings of wisdom and proverbs on friendship. I researched on some and used them. Each chapter begin with a proverb, a saying or a bible verse.
  • I am starting to be convinced that we need to look a little bit back in order to move more confidently ahead.
  • I looked at what the bible has said about friendship.
  • Under accountability have quoted proverbs 27:6. Revelation 3:9. Those whom I love I tell their faults and convinced and convict and restore and chastise. (Pg 164)
  • Under groups as a support system I’ve quoted Ecclesiastes 4:9
  • Under the chapter on what values strengthen friendship, I have quoted 1 Corinthians 13:1-7

WHAT IMPACT DO I HOPE THE BOOK WILL HAVE?

  1. Fill the documentation void on friendship and especially stories of Kenyan women friendships.
  2. Provide a framework for evaluating friendships. This will allow a better understanding and appreciation of friendship even as it allows for identifying toxic friends and finding a way to disengage with them
  3. Remind us of our diversity as Kenyans. Many women I interviewed whose friendships started in High School have friends across ethnic and economic boundaries. We need to be reminded that diversity is a strength not a weakness.
