‘Scorching, gripping, ultimately lovely.’ Margaret Atwood

‘A compulsive read … Just brilliant. Adebayo is an astounding storyteller – an exciting addition to the emerging voices in African writing.’ Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, author of Kintu.

‘A thoroughly contemporary style that is all her own … clever and funny … despite the intense sadness of her subject matter, she has produced a bright, big-hearted demonstration of female spirit, as well as the damage done by the boundlessness of male pride.’ Diana Evans, The Guardian.

‘Stay with Me is that rarest of accomplishments – a richly imagined novel that boasts not only great literary sophistication but also a narrative drive so compelling that one finds it difficult to put down the book.’ Rotimi Babatunde, winner of the 2012 Caine Prize for African Writing.

Yejide has lived a life in Jos telling people only a slice of her story: that she was barren and her husband took another wife. An invitation to her father-in-law’s funeral becomes the catalyst for her and Akin to narrate their much more complex stories of love and loss that root the breakdown of their marriage.

This devastating and compelling novel about the societal pressures that tear apart families and relationships, is set against the backdrop of 1980s Nigeria and political chaos.  Ayobami Adebayo creates a world vividly alive with the sounds and textures of daily life across university date-nights, hair-salon gossip and unending hospital visits.  Stay with Me is a book that ultimately makes us question what endures and what can be sacrificed for love and for pride.

Ayobami Adebayo was born in Lagos in 1988.  Her short fiction has appeared in magazines and anthologies including the Weaverbird Collection, Lawino Magazine and East Jasmine Review. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia and is fiction editor for Saraba magazine.  Stay with Me is her first novel; it was shortlisted for the 2013 Kwani? Manuscript Project is being published in the UK by Canongate and in the US by Penguin Random House.
